What Are TPD Regulations?
TPD regulations, or tobacco products directive regulations, outline the rules and restrictions that must be followed for the legal sale and manufacture of e-cigarettes and e-liquids in the UK.
The TPD Regulations That Vape Shops Need To Follow
Maximum Bottle Size
The maximum size e-liquid that can be sold by a vape shop is 10ml. A vape shop must not try to sell e-liquid in a single bottle that exceeds that amount.
The tanks of e-cigarettes must be no more than 2ml.
The strength of nicotine within an e-liquid must be no more than 2% or 20mg/ml.
A minimum of 30% of the product packaging must be dedicated to the nicotine warning banner; this can be on either the bottle itself or the exterior packaging of the e-liquid. All e-liquid products must come with warning labels and images on their packaging also.
All new e-liquid products must be notified to the MHRA at least six months prior to their sale. New branding additions or formulation changes also need to be notified to the HMRA, even if the product has previously been approved by the MHRA. Emissions testing All e-liquids must be emissions tested prior to their sale.
E-liquids containing nicotine must be in child-resistant packaging that is tamper-evident. If there is evidence an e-liquid has been tampered with, e.g. its seal is broken, it should not be sold.
